The Grief Rebel Way
At the core of the healing: The 12 Healing
Grief Rebel Tenets.
The 12 Healing Tenets are a permission based foundation for healing with grief. These principles are presented in no particular order. Trust that you will feel the ones that resonate. Leave the rest. The ones that are for you now will show up at exactly the right time.
You don't need to memorize them. You have enough on your plate.
Grief is simply messy. Accepting the mess softens a layer of pain.
Grief can feel disorienting, uncomfortable, and sometimes even scary. When we fear the messiness too, we add more suffering on top of suffering.
This foundation helps smooth the sharp edges of self-judgment.
The mess is normal. You are normal. You are doing the very best you can.
We are rarely taught to trust our feelings. Giving yourself permission to feel fully helps release stuck emotions and opens the door to healing.
Anger, guilt, pain, numbness, confusion, hurt, joy, surprise, delight, ease, and freedom all belong.
Let go of judging your feelings as wrong. What you feel, when you feel it, and how long you feel it is right for you.
Hope does not leave. Sometimes grief is so loud we simply cannot feel it.
Hope is not gone. It is buried beneath pain, waiting quietly.
If you are breathing, questioning, reaching, crying, resting, or taking one more step, you are already touching hope.
Hope is not always loud. Sometimes it is a whisper. Sometimes it is simply that you are still here.
You do not have to force hope or go looking for it. Just keep moving toward healing.
Hope is patient. Unwavering. Infinite. It has been with you all along.
Grief becomes a wild new experiment. We keep what serves us and release what no longer feels true.
The re-piecing can feel confusing, daunting, and exhausting, because the fabric of life has changed.
But grief also opens a strange new space: a chance to gather the pieces, choose what matters now, and stitch together something more honest and more usable.
Even in grief, I can create a life fabric that works for me now.
Grief does not care about social rules, expectations, or the polished version of you.
When loss cracks life open, there is often no energy left to pretend, perform, or make yourself more palatable.
You may force smiles, nod through empty conversations, and try to be who you were before. But grief makes one thing clear: you cannot fake your way through this.
And strangely, that is a gift. The mask gets too heavy. The costume stops working. The raw, real you begins to surface.
You do not have to keep saying “I am fine” when you are not. Grief leaves less room for pretending, and more room for truth.
Healing asks us to open. To search within the pain, confusion, and angst of grief.
Real healing means going inward, into the crevices, folds, and hidden places of you.
That work requires vulnerability: being exposed, being honest, and being open in ways we may have never practiced before.
When we stop guarding every feeling, we begin to deepen our healing.
Through grief vulnerability and new self-honesty, we expand, we heal, and we emerge more true, more authentic, and more fully ourselves.
Grief can wreck a once-strong boundary system.
We say yes when we mean no, overgive, overdo, and ignore our own needs.
This is not weakness. These boundary struggles are normal in grief.
But grief also sharpens awareness. We begin to feel what drains us, rushes us, or hurts us. That discomfort becomes information: something needs to change.
We can rebuild boundaries that protect our energy, support our healing, and fit who we are now.
I can say yes with intention, no without guilt, and rest without apology.
Self-care is not selfish. Healing expands when we take care of ourselves.
When we prioritize ourselves, we refuel. When we refuel, we can feel, process, and live more fully.
Then we have energy to thrive, not just survive.
And the truth is this: our kids, families, work, and world do not fall apart when we put ourselves first. They can flourish.
We have been conditioned to believe that if we ask for help, ask the wrong way, or ask for something too big, we are being a burden, being impolite, or even being inappropriate.
Especially during grief, we feel we are risking more upset and rejection and complicating our already unbearable situation, even by thinking of asking for help.
But the truth, and sometimes it does suck, is that in order for us to heal, we need to learn how to seek and to ask for and receive help in all forms.
At first, grief can feel too painful or too overwhelming to look like opportunity. That does not invalidate the realness of your loss.
But when you choose to feel, to immerse, and to release, you are not standing still.
Even if it feels like you are spinning, just surviving, or barely holding on, healing is still happening.
You are not going backward, regressing, or stopping. You are shifting.
When you choose healing, you are powerfully transforming, changing, expanding, and becoming more you, even in tiny unseen increments.
Comparing life after loss with life before loss is natural.
We compare to remember, revisit moments, and honor how deeply we loved.
But comparison often creates anxiety, tightness, sadness, and guilt. It can restrict healing.
When we release the comparison loop, we free ourselves to move, search, experiment, and heal more fully.
Let the old life be honored. Let the new life be explored.
You are doing the very best that you can for yourself right now.
Your grief way is yours.
No matter what you have been taught or what you have taken on as beliefs about grief, the truth is that there is no wrong way to grieve.
Although there are universal similarities about grief, we all, every one of us, grieve in our own way.
Give yourself permission: you are not grieving the wrong way, insufficiently, too much, or too little.
You are now officially grieving expertly, poignantly, poetically and gracefully.
